OUTFIT LOVE | Hipkin

Finally Friday and I thought I would share some more gorgeous oufit inspiration for the minis. If you haven't heard of the shop hipkin before it is high time you get acquainted with them. I had the chance to interview the two owners Katie Brannaghan and Bec Cunnington a while back so if you are interested in knowing a bit more about their wonderful store then please check it out here.

I always find great inspiration in their selection and they make the best outfit collages on their instagram account as well. The shop carries great quality labels like I Dig Denim, NICO.NICO, Bobo Choses, Mini Rodini, Fred Perry, ACNE miniature and more. They also personally source vintage pieces straight from LA. Katie and Bec has a strong sense of style and it shows in all their label selections which we already have been big fans of for several years. They are also the only retailers in Australia that sources the cool Danish sneakers Hummel. To make it even harder to resist their cool selection of threads their cute kids is modeling the outfits so perfectly that is hard to find any reason to put the wallet away! (Don't say I didn't warn you!)

Sponsor Highlight | CAPPIES and LANAS

Say hello to one of my new sponsors Cappies and Lanas, run by owner and creator Patrícia Lencastre. Inspired by the traditional Mozambique fabric called Capulanas, she quickly found a way to design unique clothing for unique kids. The unusual colourful fabric teamed up with a big dose of comfort means kids can look cool and feel unique at the same time.

I had the chance to catch up with the owner/founder, Patrícia recently and got to ask her a few questions regarding her label, Cappies and Lanas.

Can you tell us how Cappies and Lanas started? What is your inspiration, and how did you come up with the name?

This all started almost without me realizing it to tell you the truth! My husband, André, started traveling often to Mozambique and bringing me back the traditional fabric of the country - Capulanas. Back there women use it daily to wrap around their bodies, head or to carry their goods and babies! First I began to make clothes for myself and then I started doing some trousers to my son Manuel who is 2 year old. I loved seeing him so comfortable and with a unique style and all around us, people seamed to like it to so when we went to New York and was a big success over there there to...well, that´s when we thought: why not, let´s try this out! And the name come up also there, in conversation with our american cousin, we wanted something that was unique, easy to memorize and that at the same time reminded the origins of the project.

How do you go about sourcing your fabric for all your unique clothes and what is the process behind making them?

One of the things that I love most about these patterns and styles is that you can dress your child colorfully but not childish...if you know what I mean. So that´s the basis for our patterns, to choose colors and combinations that at first wouldn't be obvious for a child to wear. We also work with very limited quantity of each pattern to assure that all styles are very limited, so you know that your Cappies and Lanas are not all over other children and that yours is a unique one.

We are very proud to be handmaking everything with special attention to all details and quality. All our cappies and lanas come with an adjustable waist belt so that they can follow the child´s growth.
At the beginning I was making the clothes by myself but now I have some really nice ladies helping me out.

I love the comfortable look to Cappies and Lanas, I take it its an important factor for when choosing a particular style?

Well, with motherhood one of my biggest challenges when it came to dressing my son, was to find some comfortable clothing for him that was not sports wear! Comfort and quality are the most important characteristics for me when we´re talking about kids clothing but that does not mean that they can´t be stylish! And that´s what we are trying to do with Cappies and Lanas.

Do you have any current favourites in your store?

Let me tell you that I honestly love them all but if I had to choose I would go for Cappie Atacama Rose and Cappie Blue Sun!

Big thanks to Patrícia for chatting with us, and for the visit to the colourful world of Cappies and Lanas!

Sponsor Highlight | LOJA DÁDÁ

Say hello to one of my new sponsors Loja Dádá. Based in Portugal and run by owner Daniela Melamed, the shop started out to be a place where Portuguese parents could find a different option to children's wear, but has now grown into a fully international shop, shipping worldwide and offering unique labels like, Beau LOves, Mini & Maximus, Bobo Choses, Kidscase, Popupshop, Indikidual etc. to parents all over the world.

I had the chance to catch up with the owner/founder, Daniela recently and got to ask her a few questions regarding her shop Loja Dádá

Can you tell us how
Loja Dádá started? What is your inspiration, and how did you come up with the name?

Well, now I am going to be not original at all, but my shop started when my daughter was born. It started not out of the usual need to find clothes that were different at first, but to find nice things to buy online. At that time, I did not know most of the shops and brands I know now, and I thought it would be a nice thing to open a online shop in Portugal, allowing mothers to buy online at times it would be hard for them to leave the house (I never have much time for shopping).

Later, I also wanted to give them the opportunity to buy from nice small labels that they would not find anywhere near. By now, Loja Dada is a fully international shop, shipping worldwide and trying to offer a  nice selection to mums all over the world and not only in Portugal.
The name Loja Dada came from my daughter. She used to say "dadadada" all the time when she was little. So when it was time to pick a name, Dádá it was. Loja means shop in Portugese.

What do you look for when sourcing a label for your store? Is there a particular style you like?

In the beginning, I focused much on ethic production and brands that would be eco-friendly. And in fact, I still do, and all brands I chose I try to be small brands, from within the brands I try do exclude products made in China or similar (though I have had my surprises…) and then there is a style I like: I like black clothes for kids for example, I like comfortable, rad clothes. But I change all the time and sometimes try to include something new in the shop.

You have recently gotten some nice new styles from Popupshop, Beau LOves, Mini Rodini, etc what are some of your own favourites this season, and have you gotten anything particular for your own gorgeous, little girl?

My girl just loves her Popupshop tights, all models! I love the Popupshop black baggy pants, with sweaters, for our winter weekend walks on the beach and so. From Mini Rodini, I love most the basics, which are always so soft (like their other items, too). Beau Loves is just the coolest brand with such a nice lookbook. Also got  her a MIMA black sweater with Meow print, an Emile et Ida pink catmasksweater and a black dress by Emile et Ida (for some special event).

head on over to Loja Dádá to check out their great collection of unique labels from across the world, and a big thanks to Daniela for sharing her story with us, and giving us an insight into the world of Loja Dádá - obrigado!

Sponsor Highlight | Fourmonkeys

Say hello to one of my new sponsors Fourmonkeys! Fourmonkeys was an old dream come true for founder Kinga Bereczki. After a few years of detour and testing the waters, Fourmonkeys was finally founded in 2012. The original idea was to simplify parents' life by making shopping easy, fun and quick. Small and big labels intermingle to result in well selected and easy to mix and match outfits.

Emphasis is put not only on design and aesthetics but also on sustainability, fairness and comfort. Artisanship is valued high. Fourmonkeys' uniqueness lies in the innovative shopping experience, where shoppers can select from four different characters: minimal, rocker, chic and colorful.

I had the chance to catch up with the founder, Kinga recently and got to ask her a few questions regarding her shop Fourmonkeys!

Can you tell us a little about how Fourmonkeys started? What is your inspiration, and how did you come up with the name?

It is quite cliche, but there was always a dream of doing my own business, being my own boss, but it was never clear what is it exactly that I want to do. After the birth of my daughter, this idea of having a shop started to crystallize, and here I am, a few years later with an online shop.
My inspiration lies in my daughter, naturally. Her happy character, good heart and funny mind inspire me every day.

Hmm, the name! Many people ask now, why monkeys? I must say, that I don't remember. I was very sure that I want outfits, and I was thinking long of a way how to present it in an online shop. After a while I was talking about cool monkey heads on shop window dolls. It is 'fourmonkeys' because there are four different styles and outfits: the minimal, the rocker, the chic and the colourful.

Four Monkeys is a concept store who is based on four characters, the rocker, the minimal, the colourful, the chic how do you go about sourcing the different labels for the different concepts?

For two of the four characters it is really easy to order. The minimal and the rocker are closest to my taste and I have no problem finding labels. The other two are a little more difficult and exciting, because I have to think what the customers would like to buy. It is a learning curve, but I am having fun with it! I go to Playtime Paris twice a year, but most  of the time I do a lot of internet research. You never know where you will find your next favourite label: Instagram, Pinterest or Twitter...

What is your own favorites from your shop?

Oh gosh! I really have to pick???? I love the MAA sneakers, the fragment bell dress from New Generals, the ESP NO1 jeans, the sons+and daughters sunglasses...oh and the underwear from Goatmilk. Actually I love everything! I have a very minimal shop and stock, and everything I chose are really favourites! Sorry :)

Head on over to Fourmonkeys to check out this cool concept store with hand picked goodies from all over the world! Right now they are having a big 40% OFF sale so be quick for some great bargains!

Big thanks to Kinga for giving us a peek into the wonderful world of Fourmonkeys! I would like to end it of with a showing some photos from their recent fashion show they held. Loving the cool little models featuring their four character outfits.

Sponsor Highlight | Udder

Happy Monday out there!! I would like to kick start the week with welcoming a new sponsor and a big inspiration source of mine, Udder!

'Udder' is created by artist/designer Fliss Dodd. Gaining recognition on the local scene for making sculptural and functional ceramics, it was not until the birth of her first child that Fliss turned her hand to making soft toys when she felt frustrated with the saturated synthetic kids’ toy market.

She yearned to be able to give her child a ‘handmade friend’ made with love from fabric not plastic.
Years on and now 3 children inspiring the brand even more, 'Udder' has slowly grown with the introduction of 'small' collections of Children's Clothing, accessories and still the usual suspects, the 'handmade friends'. Without compromising the integrity of the business and the high quality finish, Fliss together with her husband and business partner Hal have established a close relationship with a small scale boutique manufacturer in Bali to create beautiful and unique seasonal collections.

Each piece from the collections are made by hand from start to finish with fabrics printed utilizing traditional Indonesian antique techniques - processes such as Batik, Tie and Dye, Silk Screens with a manual brushing and airbrush as well as wood block print. These techniques mean the finished fabric is unique and original, a quality which in a world of mass automated production is becoming rare and a quality which 'Udder' strives to maintain. Importantly at the same time, these garment artists are preserving their unique value crafts and a revival of this art is conceived through new applications, utilizing the fabric for a contemporary need.

Q&A with creator/artist Fliss Dodd of 'Udder':

Can you tell us a little about how Udder started? What is your inspiration, and how did you come up with the name?

Udder started many years ago when I was studying Ceramics at Uni. I was making sculptural and functional ceramic pieces, and I wanted to have an alias or mark instead of my name. The udder became that alias for a number of reasons - it was quirky, fun and a link to the work i was making (abstract sculptural cows). It was also to me a vessel and a giver of life…in my mind i was giving life to the pieces i was making.

I kept the name Udder for years and after the birth of my first child (11 years ago) I was frustrated with all the plastic and synthetic toys on the market, so I started to sew soft toys (from vintage and recycled fabrics) for him. The name 'Udder' continued and felt even more significant to use after becoming a mother. Even to now where i have stepped into children's  fashion, Udder as a name has always seemed the perfect fit.

For me, inspiration comes from so many different things so its hard to know where to start!
Fabrics - generally an idea for a collection will come from pieces of fabric that i see in our production house.
People
- I am inspired by so many different designers, artists, stylists etc.
Ethical design and production - how can this not be inspiring???
My children - they play a very important role when designing the next collections - hearing their ideas on what they would or wouldn't wear, and also overhearing their conversations and imaginative ideas when playing together.  I like the way they think, they are bold and straight down the line.

What makes Udder different from other kids fashion labels?

I remember asking myself this question when i was actually launching Udder's first collection and we were trying to see where we fitted in. It took me back to my days at art school and a mentor of mine saying that i had a very distinctive style - and i suppose that's carried through. I wanted to create kids clothes in my own personal style - designing what I love in simple pieces and choosing and creating fabrics which are unique and 'a little bit different'.
I really think the fabrics we use and the traditional Indonesian printing techniques whilst keeping it all made ethically in a small production house make us have that difference too.

If you could describe 'Udder' in three words, what would they be?

Hip - yet happy
Savvy - yet subtle
Edgy- yet elegant

Orange Mayonnaise | Sponsor Highlight

I am all giddy to present this new sponsor on the blog. Say a big welcome to Orange Mayonnaise! This Dutch based online boutique for babies, kids and teens, has a unique combination of design and urbanwear brands, from all over the world. Luxurious, comfortable basics combined with colourful or detailed items and all their goods are on stock.

Here you can find labels like, Kidscase, Mini Rodini, Munster Kids, American Outfitters, April Showers, Emile et Ida, Mini & Maximus, Finger in the Nose to just mention a few. I love how easy the webshop is to navigate around, and the nice graphic look makes me want to window shop just a bit longer every time I visit. If you are running out of inspiration you can also visit their excellent Shop The Look section which are packed with great outfits for the kiddos.

Q&A with owner Annika @ Orange Mayonnaise:

Can you tell us a little about how Orange Mayonnaise started? What is your inspiration, and how did you come up with the name?
Orange Mayonnaise is started in 2012, after working for 12 years in the fashion industry; designing as a freelancer for women and men. It was time for a new challenge. The first idea was to start my own label. But eventually the idea was born, to start an online shop. This shop brings together 2 of my biggest passions in life; (my) kids and fashion.

My inspiration is....  my kids and every day life.

The name had to be funny, international and Dutch at the same time, and eventually it became a combination of the dutch national color and a sauce where Dutch are known for. (Quote by Vincent (Samuel L.Jackson) in the classic movie Pulp Fiction; "You know what they put on French fries in Holland instead of Ketchup ? ......"

I love shops with their own sense of identity, based on your selection how would you describe Orange Mayonnaise's?

Orange Mayonnaise is a shop for mums and their kids. Here you can find fun clothes, in beautiful bright colors and with bold designs, next to comfortable and luxurious basic garments in ridge, solid fabrics. Combining these 2 styles will give you an unique look.  Orange Mayonnaise believes that everyone has the talent to create their most beautiful outfits themselves. And to make it a bit easier, we created a SHOP THE LOOK section, a 'My favorites', drag and drop system and also (as of today) a SHOP THE LOOK CREATOR...... have fun !

What are your own current favorites from the shop?
My own current favorite from the shop is, the Soft Gallery - Serpentine Jumpsuit (almost sold out!), and the April Showers by Polder - Luck Jacket is a good second.
So fancy animal designs it is...!
