Papier Mache // Shan & Toad

I really like this collaboration with one of our sponsors Shan & Toad and one of my favourite magazines Papier Mache. They picked their favourite items from Shan & Toad's AW13 selection and made it into a little online publication. This is a great place to find some autumn/winter inspiration for your little ones.

You can read the online catalog here.

Family Home | Finger In The Nose

"To step into the Norweigan-French couple Siv Tone Kvernelands and Jonathan Miltats home is  a little bit like ending up in a retro inspired painting. There is plenty of furniture in teak, smoke colored vases and brown shimmering ceramics. All mixed with modern and more urban furniture picked with a style secure hand. The style factor is high in this home and that should come as no surprise since Siv Tone is the founder and designer of the cool kids label Finger In The Nose."

There is a interview with the couple in the latest Swedish mama magazine (unfortunately only in swedish but Google translate works well). I love how they mix old and new in one wonderful looking home (where apparently the kids got a whole floor to themselves!).

READ | Keiki Issue 9

Danish child magazine Keiki has just released it's 9th issue. This is one of many times I am happy that I am speaking Danish because this magazine is packed with great interviews, ideas, interior photos, DIY etc. It was a bit extra fun to check out this issue for us since I was asked to be in their Dengang og Nu (Then and Now) interview. It's on page 82 in case you want to check it out.

I love how there are so many great online versions of magazines out now. Best thing about it is that there is direct links to ideas and suggestions, so there is no reason to write things down, you can actually go right to the source which is great. If you have missed the previews issues, don't  fret...they are right here all waiting to be read.

Artists + Kids = BIG Kids magazine

I have said it before and I am going to say it again. Go out and buy a copy of BIG Kids magazine. Proudly made here in Australia, BIG Kids magazine is a magazine that support art and curiosity in a big way. I love that there is such a magazine here, where artists both adults and kids can enjoy. This issue, Into The Dark is a beautiful exploration of our fascination for the dark and what happens in it. It is packed with collaborations between kids and adults and a few really interesting projects and interviews.

My own girl contributed to this issue and above you can see some of her creatures of the dark. She is featured along side talented artist Andy J Miller, in a piece called GROW & GROWING. Here is her little interview about creating.

WHY DO YOU DRAW?
I draw because it makes me happy.

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU FEEL WHEN YOU MAKE NEW WORK
I feel excited and curious how it will look like in the end.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE IN THE DARK?
I see shadows, stars and sometimes a big moon.

WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
Monsters and spiders, especially together. Well I am not really scared of monsters and I have held a spider but they can still be scary.

WHERE DOES YOUR IDEAS COME FROM?
From all over the place. Sometimes from movies and from good times with friends.

WHAT DOES YOUR BRAIN LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU ARE DRAWING OR INVENTING NEW CHARACTERS?
It is very busy thinking. Sometimes I don't know what to draw but it always ends up looking like something. I guess my brain knows what it is doing.

WHAT WILL YOU GROW UP TO BE?
A girl who likes to draw.

She also had to answer what she thought Bravery, Imagination, Generosity (BIG) was.

Bravery is when you are scared but do something anyway.
Imagination is in my brain and in my dreams.
Generosity is giving somebody the last of what you have.

BIG Imagination!

A little something landed in our mailbox the other day, the brand spanking new issue of BIG KIDS MAGAZINE.. An Australian art magazine that makes both kids and adults drool of delight. We were thrilled to see the drawings Mika did in there. The theme  of this issue was GAME ON, were kids and adults could share their art and thoughts of their favorite games. At the time M was playing an old Japanese game by Namco that I use to like a while back called KATAMARI. A whimsical tale of a prince that has to push a big ball of items around as quickly as possible or his father the king will grow annoyed and disappointed (I know... it sounds all bizarre but very fun to play). So M did her own take on the classic characters of Katamari (which I think she thought was the best part of the game.) It was great seeing her face when she found her own stuff in the magazine, "I made this!!"

With the magazine there is a couple of nice old school 3D glasses. They were big hit with both kids, and they got a kick out of watching the cover pop out in 3D when they looked through the glasses. D even got so smitten with them he insisted on scootering with them on, total super hero look in his mind. The magazine is such a great initiative. It is packed with imagination and it can only rub off on its readers! Find out how you can subscribe to this great mag here, or how to hand in your own submission for the next issue:  Into the Dark.

Big thanks to Jo & Lilly for sending us a copy our way. We love it!!

A Day in July

I had to share this "at home with" reportage shot by talented Amelia & Andreas Lönngren Widell for Swedish Mama magazine. I have often talked about the amazing blog mokkasin run by the lovely Sofia who also run the exquisite shop Little Cute Mokkasin, which is nothing less than amazing in it's selection of all things wonderful. Well here are some of the photos that was in the magazine portraying a day at the Mokkasin Family's home. I love the light, airy photos and the creative children's rooms with an array of the toys and tins etc that you can buy in Sofia's shop. I get instantly transported back into a lovely Swedish bubble, which makes me long for light swedish summer evenings with the sound of a koltrast, and the smell of fresh flowers picked in the garden the day before. I have said it before and I am saying it again, if you want to get a big dose of inspiration or simply just finding that special item for somebody you love, visit Sofia at mokkasin!

BIG Kids Magazine

I am head over heels in love with this magazine... Big Kids Magazine. It is a contemporary arts publication for children. Driven by discovery, experimentation and response, they invite children to participate in topical conversations about art and the world. With a senior editor that is eight years old, BIG challenges hierarchies of who is listening and who is speaking to amplify small voices in BIG ways...

The first page of the BIG story was scribed in a note flown from Perth, Western Australia to Sydney, NSW. In it, Jo shared her dream of making a creative arts-based children’s magazine with Lilly which sparked a rapid-fire correspondence and the co-creation of BIG Kids Magazine. Jo’s world is dance. Lilly’s is visual art. They are artists, educators, mothers and now publishers. They have not seen each other for over 12 years and work side by side on BIG from opposite sides of the country.

Check it out!!!
