MOMENTS | Land of Giants

Some snapshots from the weekend that passed. Over here in Victoria it was Labour Day so we had an extra day of no school to enjoy. We had some great weather so we decided to drive up into the Yarra National State Forest up in Healesville. An area that is known for great food and of course the wonderful Healesville Sanctuary. This time around we didn't visit it, instead we wanted to check out some of the magical drives they have up there in the forest and show the kids the giant trees that grows there.

The lush ferns and trees created some amazing shadow play on the roads and as the paved roads slowly disappeared it was absolutely magic as we drove deeper and deeper into the wild. We spotted a few wild kangaroos and got a lucky snapshot of a few feeding in the high grass.  It was so nice driving with the windows down, taking in the spectacular views and the air is simply so fresh up here. The kids loved the trip and it was fun to see their faces when they spotted the giant trees. We guessed how old they might be and even tried to count the rings on one (but there were far too many to count). If you are ever in this area, visit the information center and grab a map and go exploring. There is so much to see up here, and a lot of families come up here to camp too.

Visit Healesville's website for more information on this trip.

Moments | Tahbilk Winery

On our way to Bright we decided to stop by one of the oldest wineries in Australia - Tahbilk winery. Established in 1860, Tahbilk is one of Australia's most beautiful and historic family owned wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes region of central Victoria (120kms north of Melbourne), one of the nation's premium viticultural areas. Tahbilk is now home to 5 generations of winemakers.

It was a perfect stop over since we had been in the car for an hour and the kids were eager to stretch their legs. On the grounds there is also a wonderful cafe/resturant that has a beautiful scenery of the Gouldburn River. Here you can sample some of the vast array of different wines produced here and dine on fine food. It is a perfect place to bring children since there is plenty of space and the menu offers food options for kids as well. After we had topped up on food and drinks we visited the old wine cellar. The kids were amazed with all the old things they saw and our daughter couldn't get enough of the amazing seemingly never-ending dark cellar. Here you saw rows after rows of old wine barrels stacked with labels like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marsanne and 'old block' Cabernet.

We explored the cellars for a while, purchased some bottles and joined their wine club before we set off on our road trip towards Bright.

If you are in the area and would like to visit, visit their website for directions and more information.

The old saying of Melbourne having 4 seasons in one day is ringing very true these days. Summer seem to have switched places with Autumn of late and the days of wearing t-shirts and shorts seemed to have taken a rest. We had a busy weekend with the arrival of our new car and no matter the weather we were going to do a little roadtrip since it was a long wait of 9 months to get this car made and sent over to Australia. So we woke up a bit earlier on Sunday morning and hopped in the car and drove down the coast, heading for Red Hill. The kids have such a great view in this car and they were fully enjoying the majestic Victorian landscape rolling by their windows.

We knew we were getting close as the roads got smaller and the vegetation got denser. Finally we rolled into Red Hill and stopped at the lovely Epicurean restaurant/cafe. By now everybody was really hungry so we quickly had to order some yummy stone oven pizzas from their restaurant. This place is a true little gem, with food for everybody and now also a nice little store. I can definitely recommend a visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood. After lunch we had lovely walk in nature and even though the wind was on the cooler side with some warm clothes and hot chocolate it turned into a really fine day. We are hoping to have many more road trip photos to share in the future!
